The rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen hit its peak at the Italian Grand Prix last week when Verstappen crashed into Hamilton, causing his car to go right over Hamilton’s head. The two were unable to continue the race, which resulted in Daniel Ricciardo getting his first win since 2018.

Formula 1 heads to Sochi this weekend for the Russian Grand Prix, and Hamilton has a chance to surpass Verstappen in the Drivers standings if he can grab his fifth career win at the track.

Verstappen currently sits in first place in the Drivers standings with 226.5 points, and Hamilton is right behind him with 221.5.

Verstappen Enters Russian Grand Prix with Penalty

You may wonder why Verstappen is listed third on the odds list to win this weekend at +450. It's due to a penalty that he has been given due to his reckless driving that results in the crash with Hamilton last week. He's been penalized with a three-place grid drop, which means that he'll be forced to drop three places on the grid from where he finishes during the qualifying laps.

That means even if he finishes qualifying with the fastest lap, he'll have to start in fourth place on Sunday.

Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner isn't too concerned with the penalty.

“We have the grid penalty to take for Max too, but in Sochi it’s not such a handicap because of the strength of the tow down to Turn 1,” Horner said. “I was looking through the results at the Russian Grand Prix and back in 2018, Max went from last to first before needing to make his pit stop. We were second there last year but it’s a circuit we have never won at… I’m looking forward to it and seeing how we get on.”

Meanwhile, Hamilton will look to win at the track for the fifth time in his career, with his latest win coming in 2019. Valtteri Bottas won the race in 2020.
