Francisco Lindor Admits Mets Collapsed, Endears Himself to Fans
By Ben Heisler
Everyone knew it. Everyone was thinking it. But New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor finally said it.
The Mets collapsed in 2021, and his lack of performance in his first year in New York played a major role in it.
“I felt like we had a really good team coming into this year,” Lindor said to reporters on Wednesday. “We have collapsed, and I haven’t performed, especially. I know if I would have played a little bit better, I know we could have won at least five to seven more games, which we would be fighting for first place right now.
After starting the season amongst the favorites at WynnBET to win the World Series, while not officially eliminated yet, the Mets will soon have an "e" next to their name in the standings for eliminated.
Lindor was brought in this offseason to be the catalyst to get New York back into the postseason for the first time since 2016. The Mets compensated him handsomely to the tune of a 10 year, $341 million dollar extension.
Since 2016, they've had only one season where they've finished above .500, going 86-76 in 2019; finishing third in the division.
Despite going through a recent rough patch and getting booed by Mets fans, infielder Javier Baez, a World Series winner against Lindor's Cleveland Indians back in 2016, could potentially end up with the Mets long term. Lindor is fully behind keeping that infield tandem around for the next several years.
“I know that Javy does fit in with what we’re trying to accomplish here,” said Lindor. “He’s a winner. He plays the game as hard as he can day in and day out. He gives it his best, and he’s my boy, too, so that helps.
While not completely eliminated just yet, the Mets currently hold +20000 odds at WynnBET to win the World Series. The division-leading Atlanta Braves are at +1500 to win the Fall Classic, with the second-place Philadelphia Phillies behind them at +5000.
