Genesis Invitational Sunday Picks (Can Anyone Catch Joaquín Niemann?)
If you show me someone who says that they expected Joaquin Niemann to be running away from the field from start to finish this weekend, I'll show you a liar.
There's no doubting the skills of the young Chilean, but for anyone to dominate Riviera Country Club, especially when all the top golfers in the world are competing, is a feat that's beyond impressive.
Niemann will enter Sunday's final round with a three-stroke lead on second-place Cameron Young, and a six-stroke lead on the golfer in third place, Viktor Hovland. With that being said, can anyone catch Niemann, who is a -250 (bet $250 to profit $100) favorite at WynnBET?
Here are three names who could pull it odds. All odds listed below are via WynnBET Sportsbook.
Live Bets to Win the Genesis Invitational
Justin Thomas +1800
I'm going to skip right over Cameron Young (+450) and Viktor Hovland (+900). Young is too inexperienced to close the gap at a place like Riviera, and Hovland's short game could come back to haunt him. Instead, I'm going to look at Justin Thomas who is currently seven strokes back from the lead.
It may seem like an insurmountable gap, but Riviera is a tough course and could bite anyone at anytime. If Niemann goes one or two over par, Thomas could make a charge. JT's approach game is shocking whats been costing him this tournament, gaining on +0.13 strokes on the field with his irons. If he can dial those in, he could post a low score today and make it interesting.
Collin Morikawa +3300
Collin Morikawa is eight strokes back from the lead, but he's been on fire with his putter which is usually what has cost him in the past. The fact that he's been having a good week with his flat stick, means that all he has to do is dial in his irons, much like Thomas, and he could go low today.
Morikawa is still wildly believed to be the best iron player on the planet right now, so if anyone can close this gap, it's him.
Scott Scheffler +10000
At nine strokes back, Scheffler is a 100/1 long shot for a reason. With that being said, he's gaining +1.7 strokes on the field this week with his approach game, which puts him the opposite of Thomas and Morikawa. If he can find consistency with his putter, like he had in his win last week's at the WM Phoenix Open, he could make a charge.
He would need a collapse from Niemann to have a shot though, even with a strong day.
