The Sum Belt has a Wednesday night primetime matchup, giving us some weekday college football to chew on.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers has had a thrilling season to date, but it has not resulted in conference success. So far, they've stumbled out to a 1-2 start, including a road loss to Texas State two weeks ago before a bye week. Can the team get back on track in Boone against a Georgia State Panthers team that had a tough non conference schedule and is looking to turn it on in Sun Belt play?

Here are the odds and our best bet for Wednesday's matchup:

Georgia State vs. Appalachian State Odds, Spread and Total

Georgia State vs. Appalachian State Betting Trends

  • Appalachian State is 1-4 against the spread (ATS) as a favorite this season
  • Appalachian State is 4-1 to the OVER as a favorite this season
  • Georgia State is 2-3-1 ATS this season

Georgia State vs. Appalachian State Prediction and Pick

Georgia State was a darkhorse Sun Belt candidate this season, but a brutal non-conference schedule led to a slow start as the Panthers look to erase an 0-4 start to the season with a third straight victory.

App State's defense has fallen to the wayside from typically Mountaineers groups, ranking 76th in success rate and allowing nearly three points per drive (outside the top 100 nationally). This is a Georgia State team that has a dynamic quarterback in Darren Grainger that gives the Panthers plenty of different options on offense, ranking 23rd in yards per carry but also 20th in yards per pass attempt.

While Georgia State has been explosive on offense, App State has been the efficient one, racking up the 16th highest EPA/Play to offset their poor defense that is outside the top 100 in that metric on the defensive side of the ball.

These could be two teams trending in opposite directions after the Mountaineers lost as 19.5-point road favorites to Texas State before the bye week, but they did outgain the Bobcats in that game, but I'm not rushing to lay 10 points with this team at the moment.

Georgia State has scored 24 or more points in all but one game (against South Carolina on the road) and broke 40 twice. With the Mountaineers suspect defense that is 98th in explosive rush D, I expect Grainger and co. to get going on the ground and keep this game competitive.

It's dog or pass for me on Wednesday night.
