Some cities in the United States get all the luck. Boston was given the name of “title town” with its dominance in professional sports in the 2000s, and recently it's been Tampa Bay that has been the city of champions with two Stanley Cup victories and a Super Bowl.

Meanwhile, there are entire states that have been starving for some sort of championship for the better part of the last century.

The two states that make the strongest claim to have the most cursed sports franchise is Georgia and Minnesota. But which one is the most cursed of them all?

I asked that question to my Twitter followers on Monday night, and it was a tight race down to the final results.

Let’s dive into this question a little bit further, and examine each state on their own.

Georgia

Being an Atlanta Falcons fan, I’m a little bit biased. The ‘28-3’ Super Bowl has become the marker as the first example people will cite when you talk about a team blowing away a championship. It’s currently the largest blown lead in Super Bowl history, and it kept Atlanta from winning its first ever Super Bowl.

Atlanta is the home to the Falcons of the NFL, Hawks of the NBA, and the Braves of MLB. Only one championship has been won between the three teams, and it came back in 1995 when the Braves won the World Series.

To be fair, Atlanta United FC won the MLS in 2019, but does that really count?

Then there’s the Georgia Bulldogs, who have had their run of tough luck in recent years. They declared the national champions in 1980, but have had many national championships split through their fingers since then, like in 2017.

Atlanta does have some championships in its history, but no other state has blown leads and has come close to as many titles as Georgia. The most recent Georgia heartbreak was when the Braves lost to the Dodgers in the 2020 NLCS, despite holding a 3-1 series lead against them.

Don’t expect a championship to come to the state anytime soon either. The Braves are +550 just to make the MLB playoffs this season, and the Falcons and Hawks are +7500 and +4000 at WynnBET respectively to win their league’s next championship.

The Bulldogs may gave Georgia it’s next best shot at a title, as they’re fourth on the odds list to win the National Championship at +700, but we all know how this story ends.

Minnesota

Georgia may have more heartbreaking defeats, but Minnesota may take the cake for the complete lack of championships. The Minnesota Twins won the World Series in 1987 and 1991, and the Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA have four titles in the past 10 years, but outside of that, Minnesota has nothing.

The Vikings are 0-4 in their Super Bowl appearances, and throw on top of that the absolutely soul-crushing defeat that they suffered to the Falcons in the 1998 NFC Championship game when Gary Anderson missed what would’ve been a game-sealing field goal, after having not missed a kick all season.

The Minnesota Wild were introduced to the NHL in 2000, but have no Stanley Cups to show for it. The Minnesota Timberwolves joined the NBA in 1989, but they also have no championships to boast about.

The University of Minnesota has won some hockey championships in its time, but it hasn’t won a football national championship since 1960 and it has zero national championships in basketball.

The Twins are in the middle of an ugly losing record in the MLB playoffs, having lost 18 consecutive postseason games, which is mind-blowing.

Much like Georgia, the immediate future is bleak for Minnesota sports judging by the odds listed at WynnBET. The Twins are all but eliminated from the MLB postseason, the Timberwolves are near the bottom of the odds list to win the NBA Championship at +200000, and the Wild are listed at +2000 to win the Stanley Cup, which is generous at best.

Kirk Cousins and the Vikings also aren’t expected to have much of a shot at winning the Super Bowl this year, as WynnBET has their odds set at +4000, tied with the Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers.

It’s not a fun time being a Georgia or Minnesota sports fan, but at least they have a World Series or two from 30 years ago to look back on.
