Gerrit Cole Will Be Tested Tonight Against Blue Jays Hot Offense
Gerrit Cole responded to criticism about a recent interview where he stumbled through a question about whether or not he used illegal substances to help his grip, by pitching six solid innings against the Twins in his latest start.
He’ll take the mound again on Wednesday night, this time against the Toronto Blue Jays. It will be the third time this season that he’ll be facing the Jays. He pitched a 5.1 inning no-decision against them on Opening Day, while giving up two earned runs on eight hits, and then followed it up with a six inning start against them on April 12th in a 3-1 win.
WynnBET has the New York Yankees set as -165 road favorites tonight, after taking down the Jays 6-5 on Monday night. The Blue Jays are set as +135 home underdogs to bounce back after last night’s loss. The total for the game is set at 8.5 runs.
WynnBET also has player props set for the game, including Cole’s strikeout total which is set at 7.5. Cole has surpassed 7.5 strikeouts only once in his last five starts, and now he’s facing a Blue Jays team that ranks fourth in the Majors in team strikeout percentage at 22.3%.
Cole also has an earned run total for tonight set at 2.5 with the under (-140) significantly favored to the over (+104). He gave up fewer than two runs in his first two starts against the Jays this season, but now he’s facing a Toronto team whose bats have been on fire as of late.
The Blue Jays rank fourth in the Majors in runs per game at 5.04, and they have the current American League MVP favorite in Vladimir Guerrero Jr. who leads the Majors in home runs.
It will be a tough test for Cole, so despite being wrong about him in his latest start against the Twins, I’ll be taking the under on his strikeout total and the over on his earned run total.
While the Jays have had bullpen issues that have cost them games, their offense has been among the best in the Majors so this will be a true test for the current American League Cy Young favorite.
