Gerrit Cole's Cy Young Chances Are Already Finished
By Reed Wallach
Sometimes award markets act weird.
Gerrit Cole is still the betting favorite to win the American League Cy Young, but the New York Yankees ace is already way off the pace. The betting market is not reflected how poor of a start Cole has had to start the 2022 regular season.
Before we dive into why Cole is toast for this award, let's check out the odds over at WynnBET Sportsbook:

Gerrit Cole's Poor Start to 2022 is Pushing Him Out of Cy Young Contention
It has been a disastrous start for the Yankees ace to say the least.
The season may be in the early stages, but if Gerrit Cole wasn't the betting favorite before the season he wouldn't be on the odds board. HIs numbers are down across the board and he didn't get out of the second inning in Monday's start against the Tigers.
The Yankees may have won the game, but with little to no help from Cole, who has dug himself an early hole in the Cy Young race.
The betting market has not reacted quick enough to the fact that he is well off the pace. Cole's number is going to drop considerably over the next few weeks as numbers normalize across the league and Cole works to shake off the rough start to the season. If you believe in Cole, I'd wait until he falls closer to double digits and maybe even +2000 before betting him.
At +450, this implies there is about an 18% chance that Cole wins. That is not correct based on the early returns.
