Giants vs. Padres Prediction and Odds for Friday, July 8 (Can Blake Snell Finally Get a Win?)
By Joe Summers
A pair of struggling teams with big goals square off tonight as the 48-36 San Diego Padres host the 41-40 San Francisco Giants at 9:40 PM EST.
Blake Snell is still looking for his first win of the season but had his best start of the year last week, limiting the Dodgers to one run over five innings. He has a 5.57 ERA at home though and struggles with command, issuing four walks in two of his last three outings.
San Francisco turns to lefty Sam Long, a reliever making his sixth start of the campaign. He has a 1.78 ERA on the season, but the Giants' bullpen will play a large role tonight as Long hasn't pitched more than three innings in an appearance yet.
With the Padres sitting at 3-7 over their last 10 games and the Giants at 2-8, which downtrodden team will pick up a much-needed victory? Let's take a peak at the odds from WynnBET Sportsbook to help find out:
Giants vs Padres Odds, Run Line and Total
Run Line:
- Giants +1.5 (-175)
- Padres -1.5 (+145)
Moneyline:
- Giants: +137
- Padres: -147
Total:
- 7.5 (Over +100/Under -120)
Giants vs Padres Prediction and Pick
It's hard to find much reason for optimism with either club tonight. The Giants have the league's worst OPS against right-handed pitchers over the last two weeks while the Padres are averaging 2.4 runs per game in their last five.
But Blake Snell looks pretty cool in the Padres' City Connect jerseys, so that has to count for something, right?
Honestly though, Snell is trending in the right direction and this makes for a great opportunity to get his first win in 2022. Snell's 3.72 expected ERA is much stronger than his 5.13 actual ERA, and he has the benefit of playing in front of perhaps the league's best defense.
Sam Long, on the other hand, has a 4.65 expected FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching). Thus, his 1.78 ERA is a bit of a mirage. That 4.65 expected FIP would be bad if Long played in front of a good defense, but the Giants are quite likely the worst defensive outfit in MLB.
We also can't trust San Francisco's bullpen, which has fallen apart over the last month. With a poor defense and bullpen to support one of the league's worst lineups right now, I can't trust this Giants team whatsoever.
I'll back the Padres on the run line. We're getting great value with the +145 odds instead of -147 on the moneyline, and all we'll need is a timely defensive miscue or two to be on our way.
Pick: Padres -1.5 (+145)
