It is Game 1 of a four-game weekend series in the NL West with San Francisco heading down the coast to Petco Park to take on the San Diego Padres.

Tonight’s matchup is one of the most intriguing pitching matchups you could possibly get in baseball with Joe Musgrove on the mound for San Diego and Logan Webb getting the ball for San Francisco.

Giants vs. Padres Prediction and Pick

Not only do we get to see two of the best pitchers in the National League, but we get to see two teams on the verge of freefall.

The Giants are hurling back towards .500 at 41-39, and they have lost 12 of their last 16 games with a six game losing streak that just ended with a 7-5 win over Arizona.

The Padres just got swept by Seattle in a two-game mini series and now sit at 47-36. They have lost eight of their last 10 games and have a 5.02 ERA and .214 batting average over that stretch. San Francisco is 3-7 over that span with a 5.01 ERA and .204 average.

Joe Musgrove is 8-2 and both of his losses have come in his last two starts. His worst outing came on June 23 when he gave up six runs against Philadelphia, but his last start against L.A., he simply did not get the run support needed and the Padres lost 3-1. Musgrove has a 2.25 ERA and is still one of the favorites for the Cy Young in the NL.

Logan Webb has slowly been entering that Cy Young conversation. Granted, it is a conversation dominated by Sandy Alcantara. Webb is not the dominant strikeout pitcher we often see. He only strikes out 7.9 batters per nine innings, but has worked his way to a 3.13 ERA in 16 starts.

Neither of these offenses have had any success lately, and with two of the best pitchers in the league on the mound, the low total makes sense, but 6.5 is still a staggering number to see in modern baseball. Musgrove is not in his top form lately and that could get us to seven runs especially with both staff’s ERA north of five in their last 10 games.

Pick: Over 6.5 (-120)
