Tuesday features an interesting game between two teams quickly falling out of contention in their respective divisions. The San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies are both in third place and getting close to fourth every day.

The Giants entered this series on the heels of embarrassing losses to the Reds in two of their previous three games. The Giants went 2-7 SU in their nine games before this series and nearing the Diamondbacks' record in fourth place. San Fran is still over .500 but may not be for long if this continues.

The Phillies are in a similar boat after dropping four of their previous 14 games before San Francisco got to town. The Mets are running away with the NL East and I think it will take a miracle for the Phillies to finish better than third.

Giants vs. Phillies Prediction and Pick

At first glance, tonight’s starters might look like a well-matched pair. But, I think that Jakob Junis and Ranger Suarez are two guys heading in different directions. Junis enters this game at 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in 32 ⅔ innings of work for the Giants. After not allowing a run in April, Junis came back down to earth but has remained impressive in May; giving up more than two runs just once all year. I like his strikeout to walk rate as well at 24:5 heading into Tuesday’s matchup. The Phillies have a dangerous offense, but they are very unreliable and not a team I love betting on.

I don’t have a ton of faith in Suarez right now either. His 4.74 ERA and 1.53 WHIP are problematic and he has given up eight runs in his last 7 ⅓ innings of work. I also don’t like his K/BB rate which was 1:1 in his last start.

I’m happy to fade the Phillies here as I think the Giants are a more well-rounded team and don’t rely so much on an inconsistent lineup.

Pick: Giants +125 to win
