The San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies finish up their three-game mid-week series Wednesday night with both teams desperate for wins.

Each of these squads entered in third place in their respective divisions after many expected them to compete for top spots. The Phillies have been plagued by an inconsistent offense that was supposed to be the cornerstone of this franchise. The Giants, on the other hand, are raking, but cannot hold a lead thanks to a combined ERA of 4.36.

So, a team that can’t hit and a team that can’t pitch. Who comes out on top?

Let’s dig in and find out.

Giants vs. Phillies Prediction and Pick

One of the recent disappointments for the Giants this year has been the downfall of Carlos Rodón. San Francisco hoped he could build upon his amazing 2021 season in Chicago. However, after finishing 2021 with a 2.37 ERA in 132 ⅔ innings, Rodón has a 3.60 ERA so far in 50 innings. The Giants are 1-4 straight up in Rodón’s last five starts including a crushing loss to the Reds last week. However, Rodon was fantastic in April with a 1.17 ERA in 23 innings and I think that he can regain that form here. His recent issues provide us with great odds for a better team on paper.

The Phillies come off a sweep at the hand of the Mets and already lost the series opener to the Giants. The good news is Aaron Nola is having a decent year and coming off a strong start against the Braves. Nola limited the reigning chaps to a single run over 8 ⅓ innings of work. But Nola has been very inconsistent and it's hard to predict what kind of a night the right-hander will have.

I think that Nola has an edge over Rodon right now but overall the Phillies have been horrible. I’m going to side with the road dogs here in the hope that Rodon remembers how to pitch like an ace.
