It appears that Newton’s Laws of Gravity apply to wins and losses in Major League Baseball, as the Cincinnati Reds are proving, what goes up, must come down.

The Reds' loss total was at record-breaking high levels early in the season. But has since come down as the Reds are 9-7 in their 16 games leading into this series with the San Francisco Giants. For a team that started the year 3-22, this is a relative miracle.

Meanwhile, the Giants are struggling a bit as we near the end of May having lost seven of their last 11 games leading into this series. It will be interesting to see how they perform against a historically bad team on a hot streak.

Giants vs. Reds Prediction and Pick

While the Reds are playing like an actual Major League team again, I don’t love their chances tonight against Carlos Rodón and the Giants. Rodón hasn’t been as dominant as I expected he would be, but with a 3.43 ERA and 1.16 WHIP, he’s doing just fine.

His 62 strikeouts have him tied for seventh in the league and he is in the top 35 of both ERA and WHIP. Not Cy Young numbers but the Giants have to be happy with his performance most nights.

While the Reds have yet to announce a starter, the general consensus is that Graham Ashcraft will get the call. He was called up to start on Sunday against the Blue Jays in his MLB debut.

Ashcroft pitched 4 ⅓ innings while giving up two runs on four hits. He struck out three and walked two. All in all, he avoided any disasters and deserves another go-around tonight. To be honest, it doesn’t matter much to me who starts this game for Cincinnati.

Rodón is good enough to carry this team past anyone the Reds have on the roster. I think he does just that tonight.

Pick: Giants RL -1.5 (-125)
