The San Francisco Giants' slim playoff hopes grow slimmer by the day, as the club sits 5.5 games back in the NL Wild Card race. This series with the Colorado Rockies gives the Giants a great opportunity to make up some ground though, and they'll send Alex Wood to the mound tonight to take on Jose Urena.

Wood has been shaky most of the season, but held eight of his last nine opponents to three runs or fewer. As a result, the Giants are 5-2 in his last seven outings.

Urena, meanwhile, is a bit of a disaster for Colorado. He's got a 5.06 ERA in August, giving up five home runs in his last two starts. The Rockies have five straight losses behind him, and his underlying metrics are terrible.

Can San Francisco take advantage of a winnable game or will Colorado finally pick up a win behind Urena?

Here are the odds from WynnBET Sportsbook to help analyze this Giants vs Rockies matchup:

Giants vs Rockies Odds, Run Line and Total

Run Line:

  • Giants -1.5 (-110)
  • Rockies +1.5 (-110)

Moneyline:

  • Giants: -152
  • Rockies: +142

Total:

  • 11.0 (Over -120/Under +100)

Giants vs Rockies Prediction and Pick

Jose Urena is a pitcher I look to fade as often as possible. He's got a 5.80 expected ERA, which would easily be the worst among MLB pitchers if he had enough innings to qualify, and he's compiled a FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) above 8.29 in each of his last two starts. That's exceptionally bad.

Just look at Urena's MLB Statcast Pitching Profile and tell me you'd feel comfortable betting on this guy:

The Giants rank 13th in OPS against right-handed pitchers this month and Colorado's bullpen is atrocious, so San Francisco will have ample opportunity to score.

I really like what I've seen from Alex Wood lately too. Here's his expected FIP from his last nine starts:

  • 8/14 vs PIT: 2.85
  • 8/8 @ SDP: 3.88
  • 8/2 vs LAD: 4.21
  • 7/28 vs CHC: 4.90
  • 7/23 @ LAD: 3.10
  • 7/15 vs MIL: 1.07
  • 7/10 @ SDP: 2.11
  • 7/5 @ ARI: 3.00
  • 6/29 vs DET: 2.30

That's a strong couple of months. Wood gives the Giants a significant advantage over Urena, and I think San Francisco will capitalize.

Look for the visitors to push Colorado to 2-6 in it's last eight as home underdogs and give Urena another loss.

Pick: Giants -1.5 (-110)
