Grab These Value Odds for Blue Jays vs. Red Sox Tonight
By Ben Heisler
Robbie Ray vs. Garrett Richards several years ago would have been a high profile matchup of two up and coming flame throwers. This year, however, it's a different story.
With a projected total of 10.5 (Over -130 | Under +110) and the Blue Jays favored against the Red Sox on the money line at -140 (bet $140 to win $100) at WynnBET, tonight's AL East matchup should provide plenty of offensive opportunities for two of the best lineups in baseball.
Blue Jays vs. Red Sox Preview
While Ray (8-5, 3.12 ERA) has turned himself around into one of the Blue Jays' most consistent starters in 2021, Richards (6-5, 4.99 ERA) has been disastrous. Since his solid 6-inning, 2 ER start on June 1st on the road at Houston, Richards has not been able to go deep into games at all. In eight starts since, opponents are hitting .337 off of him while pitching to an ERA of 6.99. He's being barreled up too, giving up 9 home runs while striking out only 26 batters in 37.1 IP.
To make matters worse for Richards, he's facing a Blue Jays lineup that is tops in the Majors in weighted on-base average, or wOBA; a metric evaluating all-around offensive numbers crediting hitters for the value of each outcome at the plate. Only the San Francisco Giants have more home runs this season, and they've played in three more games than Toronto!
As for Ray, he's looking more like the impressive and nearly unhittable lefty during his 2017-18 seasons in Arizona. His WHIP (walks + hits / inning pitched) is the lowest of his career at 1.05, and his strikeout/walk ratio (5.26) is more than two points higher than his All-Star season in 2017. For whatever was irking him the last two seasons, he has found his happy place pitching for the Blue Jays this year.
Blue Jays vs. Red Sox Prediction
If you don't have a WynnBET account, this is where you're missing out if it's available in your state. Right now, the Blue Jays are only -105 on the money line for the first five innings. Most other sportsbooks have that number closer to -130 to -140.
Ray could always blow up against a tough Red Sox offense that typically hits left-handers very well, but it's a far more dire spot for Richards who has struggled mightily both as of late, as well as vs. the Blue Jays. AL MVP candidate Vladimir Guerrero Jr has a .667 batting average in nine AB's against Richards. His teammate Teoscar Hernandez is hitting .545 in 11 ABs against the veteran right-hander.
The Blue Jays should once again knock Richards around early and often, and by taking them on the money line for only the first five innings, bettors can avoid the heartbreak of the Blue Jays' bullpen letting them down late.
