Gus Johnson: Georgia Still No. 1 Team in College Football Despite Michigan Blowing Out Ohio State
By Reed Wallach
Fox Sports broadcaster and Hampton by Hilton partner Gus Johnson sat down with BetSided to discuss the latest in College Football Playoff rankings after a major shakeup in the top five with No. 3 Michigan blowing out No. 2 Ohio State on the road in The Game.
He also made sure to tell us how to travel and why to look for the nearby Hampton by Hilton for comfortable vacationing around the holidays.
Johnson was on the call for the massive matchup between the Wolverines and Buckeyes for Fox Sports, gives a ton of credit to Michigan and their ability to pull away from the Buckeyes in the second half due to the play of quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
"Michigan was really well prepared [for the Ohio State game]. They established physicality, especially in the second half. J,J. McCarthy played lights out, which I think is going to make him a Heisman Candidate, especially if they can beat Purdue," Johnson told BetSided.
McCarthy was able to hit for three long passing touchdowns in the victory, completing 12 passes that went for 263 yards and added a rushing touchdown as well.
However, despite the success of the Wolverines, who are poised to make their second consecutive College Football Playoff, Johnson believes that Georgia is still the rightful No. 1 team in the country and the clear favorite to win back-to-back National Championships.
"There's College Football, and there's Georgia on top of it," Johnson said emphatically.
"The Bulldogs are the best team in the country, they are the defending National Champions, they are rugged, they are physical, they are organized and disciplined."
While noting that Michigan deserves a ton of praise under coach Jim Harbaugh for their play the last two seasons, Johnson notes, "in order to be the champions, you have to beat the champions."
The Bulldogs are -175 to win the National Championship at FanDuel Sportsbook while Michigan is the second choice at +300. However, both teams must lock up their spot on Saturday with Georgia playing LSU in the SEC Championship and Michigan taking on Purdue in the Big Ten Championship.
