Have Jaguars' Preseason Struggles Changed Trevor Lawrence's Rookie of the Year Odds?
By Peter Dewey
The Jacksonville Jaguars have struggled this preseason under new head coach Urban Meyer, and No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence hasn’t lit the preseason circuit on fire like many expected.
Lawrence finished Monday night’s game against the New Orleans Saints 14-for-23 for 113 scoreless yards. He’s been underwhelming compared to other rookie quarterbacks despite being favored on WynnBET at +275 odds to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
Zach Wilson, who is +600 to win the OROY, and Justin Fields (+525) have looked better than Lawrence, and while it’s only preseason, it’s concerning that the Jaguars first-team offense has struggled compared to when third-stringer CJ Beathard was in the game Monday.
Lawrence took some positives away from his second chance at NFL action, but bettors on the No. 1 overall pick certainly would’ve liked to see more in the early action of his career.
"I did think I got the ball out of my hand quicker this week," Lawrence said. "Just sometimes, I want to find the checkdown. If it's a short completion, let's take five [yards] and move on. I think sometimes I threw it away when I could've hit the checkdown. But I thought that was something I did better this week -- getting the ball out of my hand."
Lawrence’s odds are the same at WynnBET for now, but if these struggles continue into games that actually count, it's possible another player could jump him in the standings.
Jacksonville is hoping that Lawrence can change its fortunes this year after a 1-15 season in 2020, but oddsmakers have the Jags projected to win just six games with the over (-135) as the favorite to the under (+115). Lawrence is going to need to be much better to hit the over on that number.
