Iowa State heads into Week 9 after having regained its spot in the AP Top-25 after beating Oklahoma State 24-21 last week. The No. 22 ranked team in the nation is heading to West Virginia this week to take on the Mountaineers. The spread opened at a TD and has since been bet down to 6.5-points in favor of the visiting team.

West Virginia is also coming off a win, but it was its first since beating Virginia Tech 27-21 on September 18. A big win for sure, but those victories are few and far between for the Mountaineers this year. Their losses have come to Baylor, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Maryland.

Iowa State vs. West Virginia Prediction and Pick

The Cyclones winning three straight and regaining their spot in the Top-25 after a loss to Baylor showed me a lot of grit. I see teams every week who suffer similar fates, but never come close to regaining the early-season hunger they had. Iowa State proved to me they are no such team. When you take a look behind the stats and how they stack up with the rest of the nation, it’s no wonder this team refused to fold after losing to Baylor.

The Cyclones have both an offense and a defense that ranks in the Top-20 in points per game and points per play. Their defense is also exceptional at limiting the yards other teams can muster, ranking third in the nation, allowing just 261.3 total yards per game. The team also does not allow their opponents to extend drives with a 3rd down conversion rate of around 30 percent. Only eight teams have a better mark on the year in this category.

West Virginia’s offensive and defensive rankings are nice, but nowhere near as impressive as the Cyclones. They don’t break the Top-50 in any major statistic and I think they'll be in for a rough Week 9. While I do like the under in this game, I'll be taking the Cyclones to cover 6.5-points as a team that looks sharper each week.

Prediction: Iowa State Cyclones -6.5 (-110)
