The Houston Texans released Marlon Mack yesterday, clearing the way for rookie Dameon Pierce to take over the starting job. Houston still has Rex Burkhead on the roster, but that shouldn't affect Pierce's stock -- which is skyrocketing right now.

Pierce is now one of the hottest names in fantasy football this year after being named the starting running back in Houston, but is he the right bet for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year?

NFL Rookie of the Year Odds:

  • Kenny Pickett (QB, PIT) +700
  • Breece Hall (RB, NYJ) +800
  • Treylon Burks (WR, TEN) +900
  • Chris Olave (WR, NO) +1000
  • Garrett Wilson (WR, NYJ) +1000
  • George Pickens (WR, PIT) +1000
  • Kenneth Walker III (RB, SEA) +1000
  • Skyy Moore (WR. KC) +1000
  • Drake London (WR, ATL) +1200
  • Christian Watson (WR, GB) +1400
  • Dameon Pierce (RB, HOU) +1400
  • James Cook (RB, BUF) +1400

Dameon Pierce ROY Odds

This preseason, Pierce looked fantastic for Houston and Pro Football Focus agrees.

Pierce will receive most of the touches in the Texans backfield and will be in a great position to put up numbers. This is a team that is in need of playmakers that might lean on their rookie running back. The problem is that Houston could be trailing a lot and need to throw the ball this season. Pierce could end up off the field in the second half if Davis Mills needs to air it out.

Saquon Barkley in 2018 is the last time a running back won the OROY. Since then, it has been two quarterbacks and a wide receiver as the NFL turns to the passing game more and more. Kenny Pickett is the only first-round QB this season and is starting the year on the bench, which means there is a chance for a rookie running-back revival in 2022.
