Is Pete Carroll Trying to 'Run' Russell Wilson Out of Seattle?

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has put on his "establish the run" goggles back on again.

Following a tumultuous offseason that actively named Russell Wilson in several trade rumors with multiple teams, it appears the head coach and franchise quarterback could be butting heads once again after publicly clearing the air this summer.

One key area of disagreement is the idea that Seattle must "run the football" in order to be successful on offense. Carroll, on multiple occasions over the last four years has been trying to establish the run game on offense, but has not found the consistency he's looking for.

“It’s been the same story for a while now,” Carroll said.

“I hate keeping the topic alive. I want to get this thing and put it behind us.”

He was also asked by reporters if their offensive line is capable of executing that plan to run the ball more often and more effectively.

"I think we have the guys we need to do this, yes," Carroll told the media on Monday.

"We averaged more than 4 yards a carry. We need to run it more."

Carroll's fascination with the need to ground-and-pound despite having one of the best deep-ball passers in the league is only hitting the turbo button on Wilson packing his bags and heading elsewhere. Via Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated, Wilson leads the league in completion percentage and yards per attempt on throws in the "mid-range" category less than 20 yards. Hard to fathom why a quarterback who has D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett is not taking shots down field.

FOX Sports' Nick Wright described the situation as "the middle of the end" of Wilson's tenure in Seattle.

Seahawks Super Bowl and Playoff Odds are Falling Fast

The Seahawks are 3-6, in last place by four games in the loss column in the NFC West and are an astounding 1-3-0 at home this year. Since Carroll took over in 2010, Seattle has gone 65-27 at home.

They're also falling out of any real consideration to get to the playoffs and make it to the Super Bowl according to the oddsmakers. Seattle is currently +6000 at WynnBET Sportsbook just to win the NFC, and are +10000 to win a championship. This after they entered the year at +260 odds to win the division, +1500 for the NFC, and +3000 for a Super Bowl with Russell Wilson at the helm. They also would need to go on a major win streak to hit the over on their preseason projected win total of 10.

Since their last Super Bowl appearance, the Seahawks have only won three postseason games, all of which came in the Wild Card round. With the season seemingly done, Carroll and Wilson have one final shot to come together and run the offense that makes sense for both parties to be successful. Unfortunately, it appears ego and stubbornness will get in the way of the Seahawks keeping their most prized player.
