It's a Trap: Which NFL Odds are Most Deceiving in Week 5?

Sometimes the lines look deceiving, like the Buffalo Bills favored by 17 points over the Houston Texans in Week 4. But sure enough, the Bills covered.

Or what about the Tennessee Titans as six-point favorites over the New York Jets? Well, the Titans committed eight penalties, allowed quarterback Ryan Tannehill seven times, and missed a field goal in overtime.

Those lines were deceiving to some, but which lines appear to be a trap in Week 5?

All lines are courtesy of WynnBET Sportsbook.

Detroit Lions (+9) vs. Minnesota Vikings

I know the Vikings beat the Seattle Seahawks by 12 and the Lions are a lesser quality team, but both teams stack up pretty closely by the numbers.

Lions vs. Vikings Stats

Passing Offense

  • Lions: 275 yards per game (11th in the NFL)
  • Vikings: 283 yards per game (10th in the NFL)

Rushing Offense

  • Lions: 101.8 yards per game (20th in the NFL)
  • Vikings 112.3 yards per game (13th in the NFL)

Passing Defense

  • Lions: 267.5 yards against per game (15th in the NFL)
  • Vikings: 278.5 yards against per game (22nd in the NFL)

Rushing Defense

  • Lions: 132.8 yards against per game (24th in the NFL)
  • Vikings: 135.5 yards against per game (25th in the NFL)

This certainly looks a lot closer than a nine-point game to me.

New Orleans Saints vs. Washington Football Team Total (o/u 44)

The Saints just allowed the New York Giants to put up 27 points on them in Week 4, and that was a Giants team without Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton.

The Washington Football Team just allowed Matt Ryan and Cordarrelle Patterson to torch their defense for 30 points.

The total in each game the WFT have played since Taylor Heinicke has taken over at quarterback has been 59 or higher.

New Orleans hasn’t scored too many points this season, but this will be the worst defense that it has faced. This total could be 40 or so at halftime.

Denver Broncos (+1) vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

I know the Steelers sit in the basement of the AFC North and are being left for dead by many bettors and the Broncos are 3-1 and tied with the Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders atop the AFC West. Things appear to be going the wrong way.

Just like this spread of one between Denver and Pittsburgh.

The Broncos defeated the New York Giants, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the New York Jets in their first three games. Let’s not go crowning them champs of anything just yet.

The Steelers beat the Bills in Week 1 and since have strung together three consecutive losses to the Raiders, the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Green Bay Packers. Those are respectable losses.

You got a 3-1 Denver team and a 1-3 Pittsburgh team where their records don’t tell the whole story. I’m not buying Denver at +1, especially if Drew Lock is under center.
