Its a Trap: Which NFL Odds are Most Deceiving in Week 9?
By Thomas Snodgrass
Chances are that you lost money on the Cincinnati Bengals last week.
The New York Jets were 11.5-point underdogs, and not only did they cover the spread, they won straight up. Survivor leagues were destroyed, betting slips were torn, and faces were palmed in shame all across the country, all thanks to quarterback Mike White and the Jets.
That spread seemed innocent, until it burned us all.
The Detroit Lions were three point underdogs, but the Philadelphia Eagles came into town and gave Lions head coach Dan Campbell something to really cry about, a 44-6 loss.
That narrow three-point spread looks quite silly in hindsight. But still not as silly as Dan Campbell.
Here are three games that appear to have deceiving lines in Week 9, odds courtesy of WynnBET Sportsbook.
New York Jets (+10) vs. Indianapolis Colts
Nice try, Jets. It’s not gonna work this time.
New York heads to Indianapolis on a short week, and will be facing a very solid Colts defense that should be able to contain Mike White a little better than the Bengals did last week.
The Jets are still averaging just 16.3 points per game and are dead last in rushing. Indianapolis’ defense should stymie New York’s offense, and create some turnovers as well.
The Colts should cover this spread easily.
Los Angeles Chargers vs. Philadelphia Eagles (+2)
WynnBET has the Eagles as an underdog on a narrow two-point spread. Sure the Chargers haven’t been playing their best, and the Eagles just destroyed the Lions last week, but this game doesn’t seem as close as the book assumes.
Philadelphia finally got their ground game going last week, but apparently it had to wait for injuries to occur and to call up a man from their practice squad to finally get it going.
The Chargers have a strong passing defense that will give Jalen Hurts fits, and I don’t think Boston Scott and Jordan Howard will duplicate their efforts in Week 9.
Chicago Bears (+6.5) vs Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers’ defense continues to play well, and despite their mediocre 4-3 record, they have not allowed more than 27 points in any game this season (27 points to Green Bay in Week 4).
The Bears won’t reach that number either. They haven’t scored more than 24 points in any game. (24 points against the Detroit Lions in Week 4). It could be tough for rookie quarterback Justin Fields to find the endzone, as it has been.
Chicago’s defense has been getting hammered on the ground, allowing 125 rushing yards per game, so if you’re going to back a rookie in Week 9, make it Najee Harris and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
