Well, that didn't take long.

Less than a full spring training into the 2022 MLB season and Mets ace Jacob deGrom is hurt. Again. And is undergoing an MRI. Again. Because you know, Mets fans can't have nice things. A lesson those brave souls who put money on the Mets to win anything are now learning.

Well, the MRI came back and it's not pretty. While not season ending, deGrom is hitting the shelf for the first month of the season.

The Mets are currently +1200 at WynnBET to win the World Series this year and +500 to win the NL Pennant, but I wouldn't touch those bets with a 10-foot pole following this deGrom news. Sure, they have fellow ace Max Scherzer now, and their roster has the talent and depth to win without one guy. But deGrom is the ace you need to not only win games in the regular season, but to be your shutdown guy in the postseason. The Mets didn't sign Scherzer this offseason to lead their staff. They signed him to be the No. 2 behind deGrom.

This wouldn't be so concerning if it wasn't for deGrom's injury history. Last year he made only 15 starts while dealing with neck, lats, back, shoulder, forearm and elbow issues. He also missed time in 2016 with injuries. Around that he was the most dominant pitcher in baseball. But if he can't take the hump every five days 30 times a year, the Mets are in big trouble.

If you already placed some money down on the Mets, I mean, what can you do? Just hope this is but a minor blip in another dominant season for deGrom. If you haven't bet on them yet, smart move. While this team always comes into the season with high expectations, they routinely fail to live up to them. That's why you always avoid betting a team with a history of injuries and underperformance early. The chances of cashing in are just one misstep away.
