UPDATE: Jacob deGrom left his start after five innings and only 68 pitches with an apparent injury. He gave up one earned run, so the under hit, but Mets fans are focused on his injury.

New York City has a pair of aces up its sleeve, and while Gerrit Cole may be trying to stake his name as the city’s best pitcher, two-time Cy Young award winner Jacob deGrom has the title locked down until further notice.

deGrom has been up to his usual tricks in 2021. He’s allowed just two earned runs and struck out 59 batters in 35 innings this season. New York Mets fans were given a scare last week when deGrom was scratched from his May 4 start, but it appears the issue was minor and he will be back out there on Sunday.

With the Mets looking to complete the series sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks, deGrom could be in line for a big day as he eyes his third win of the season. WynnBET has deGrom’s player prop projection for earned runs set at 1.5 with the under (-200) being heavily favored to the over (+145).

Asking a pitcher to only give up one earned run is usually wishful thinking, but when it comes to deGrom, it’s almost a given. The Mets’ ace sports a mind-blowing 0.51 earned run average this season despite his 2-2 record.

Seriously, can the Mets get this man some run support?

Arizona has been worse offensively on the road this season (4.36 runs per game) than at home (5.82) and it has scored just six runs over the first two games of the series in New York.

deGrom has allowed just 16 hits and four walks over 35 innings and hasn’t allowed more than five combined hits or walks in a game this season. He is the current favorite to win the NL Cy Young at WynnBET with +400 odds (bet $100 to win $400).

Here’s a breakdown of his five starts in 2021:

April 5 at Philadelphia: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 7 K’s

April 10 vs. Miami: 8.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 14 K’s

April 17 at Colorado: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 14 K’s

April 23 vs. Washington: 9.0 IP, 2 H, 15 K’s

April 28 vs. Boston: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 K’s

Yeah, good luck with that today Arizona.

If you’re worried about how he is doing physically after getting scratched, it’s completely understandable. However, the Mets wouldn’t send their prized possession to the mound unless he was completely healthy, and a healthy deGrom is hands down the best pitcher in baseball.
