Jacob deGrom vs. Max Scherzer: Who's the Best Bet to Win the National League Cy Young Award?
By Reed Wallach
Major League Baseball season is fast approaching and everyone is rushing to get their Futures bets in with the abridged spring training due to labor negotiations.
On Sunday, New York Mets star pitchers Jacob deGrom and new acquisition Max Scherzer showed off the tantalizing upside of the Mets in 2022. In the team's 7-3 win over the Cardinals, the two combined for 12 strikeouts, allowing 3 runs and 7 hits.
DeGrom is the betting favorite to win his third NL Cy Young while Scherzer is tied for the second choice to win his fourth award at WynnBET Sportsbook. Who has the betting value given that both seem primed to be on an NL Contender and supported by a high powered lineup.
Odds to Win NL Cy Young
- Jacob deGrom: +350
- Corbin Burnes: +800
- Max Scherzer: +800

- Brandon Woodruff: +1200
- Carlos Rodon: +1200
- Zack Wheeler: +1500
- Aaron Nola: +2000
- Max Fried: +2000
- Freddy Peralta: +2500
- Jack Flaherty: +2500
- Logan Webb: +2500
- Sandy Alcantara: +2500
Jacob deGrom is the Rightful Favorite to Win Third NL Cy Young
deGrom was the runaway winner to win the Cy Young before an injury derailed his season. The Mets ace posted a 1.08 ERA across 15 starts last season and was the odds on favorite to win the award before his elbow ailment in the middle of the year.
However, he looked the part in his short stint in Spring Training.
The question is, can deGrom stay healthy enough to win the award? If he is able to put together a full season, the +350 number will evaporate quickly. He's that good, but how will the addition of Scherzer impact his standing?
I don't see the two cancelling each other out like we see in some awards markets across other sports. The two will play on different days.
Scherzer did note in the Dodgers postseason last October that he was suffering from some fatigue after pitching over 179 innings in the regular season, so the Mets may manage his workload during the year.
The same can be said for deGrom, who missed half the year with an elbow injury, but the issue for Scherzer is that he will be second fiddle to deGrom. It will take a lot to change the narrative that the 2019 World Series champ is more valuable than deGrom, who looks to be at full health heading into the 2022 campaign. To me, health is the only thing holding No. 48 back and +350 can be looked at as a steal very quickly.
