Jacob deGrom Will Slow Down Red-Hot Braves
By Peter Dewey
Nothing could stop the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night when they put up 20 runs in a 20-2 win over the New York Mets, so it’s fitting that they have to face the best pitcher in baseball just a day later.
Atlanta will square off with Jacob deGrom on Thursday, and it’s a good thing they padded their stats in Wednesday’s win, because deGrom has allowed 10 more hits in 13 starts than the Braves had in last night’s game alone.
The easy favorite for the NL Cy Young award, deGrom is projected to continue his historic season tonight, as WynnBET has his earned runs prop set at 1.5 with the under (-125) as the favorite to the over (-105).
This season, deGrom has allowed just just six earned runs, and he’s allowed over 1.5 runs in only one start, which came his last time out against the Philadelphia Phillies.
That performance pushed his earned run average up to 0.69 on the season, which is still a ridiculous number considering we have entered July. In addition to his earned runs prop, deGrom’s strikeout prop is set at 9.5 with the over (+110) set as a major underdog to the under (-150).
Atlanta is 22nd in Major League Baseball in strikeouts per game at 9.33, but deGrom hasn’t totaled double-digit strikeouts since June 11, and he’s done it on just five occasions this season.
Still, deGrom punched out six Braves in his last start against them on June 21 despite only throwing five innings as he was returning from an injury. He threw 88 pitches in his last start against the Phillies, and if he gets a similar workload tonight, he may have a chance to cash in on the plus odds on his strikeout prop.
Either way, the Braves picked up just one hit against deGrom on June 21, and I wouldn’t expect things to be much different tonight. The Mets ace has been absolutely unstoppable this season, and should help the Mets rebound from last night’s blowout loss.
