Jared Goff Expected to Be Among League Leaders in Interceptions
By Peter Dewey
It’s going to be a tough year to be a Detroit Lions fan.
With Matthew Stafford now with the Los Angeles Rams, Jared Goff will take the reins as the leader under center for Detroit. Oddsmakers don’t seem to have much confidence in Goff to lead a rather underwhelming roster, as the Lions lead the odds list on WynnBET to be the last winless team at +250.
As if things couldn’t get any worse, WynnBET released odds for the quarterback to lead the league in interceptions, and let’s just say Lions fans won’t be pleased.
Goff, who’s thrown 29 interceptions over his last two seasons, has the second-shortest odds to lead the league in the category at +800. Only Sam Darnold (+750) and Ryan Fitzpatrick (+750) have shorter odds than Goff.
While some of it is because of Goff’s history with interceptions, the Lions lack of a top wideout also hurts Goff’s chances of being successful in 2021. Detroit let Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones Jr. walk in free agency, and now Tyrell Williams, Breshad Perriman and rookie Amon-Ra St. Brown are expected to be the team’s top receivers.
While tight end T.J. Hockenson will also be a key target for Goff, there isn’t much to love about the Lions’ attack. D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams will lead the backfield, with WynnBET projecting Swift to be the clear No. 1 option.
Goff’s career has taken an interesting turn since leading the Rams to the Super Bowl in 2018. Los Angeles scored just three points in the Super Bowl that season en route to a loss to the New England Patriots.
Goff has never found his 2018 form, and the Rams were willing to trade multiple picks to move on from him and acquire Stafford this offseason. It’s possible the former No. 1 overall pick can turn his career around in Detroit, but oddsmakers don’t see that happening in 2021.
