Jeff Wilson Jr. or Raheem Mostert: Which Dolphins Running Back Should You Trust?
Just when it looked like Raheem Mostert was taking control of the Miami Dolphins’ backfield, Miami went out and traded for Jeff Wilson Jr. at the trade deadline.
Wilson was the lead back in San Francisco after Elijah Mitchell got hurt in Week 1, but then was relegated to the bench once the San Francisco 49ers traded for Christian McCaffrey.
The Dolphins are one of the worst running teams in the league and have been looking for a back to help get them over the hump. Mike McDaniels clearly loves his San Francisco running backs, but which one is going to take the lead job – making them the better bet for this week?
Based on what we saw against the Bears, Jeff Wilson is going to make his mark on the Dolphins instantly. Last week he had 28 snaps, 13 routes and 12 opportunities. All of those numbers were higher than Mostert’s.
Wilson has taken the lead in this backfield, and he hasn’t even had a full week of practice. As he’s able to get more chemistry with this team, it’ll be easier and clearer to back him.
This week, the Dolphins play the Cleveland Browns, who are 21st in opponent yards per carry. If there is going to be a time for Wilson to make his presence felt on the ground, it’s going to be now against a struggling Browns defense.
Mostert has had four games this season in which he finished with less than 4.0 yards per carry. That efficiency isn’t going to get it done. Just as Mostert became the lead back in Miami, he’s having it taken away.
