Jimmy Garoppolo Insinuates Trey Lance Could Be Used Like Taysom Hill
By Peter Dewey
Jimmy Garoppolo appears to be poised to be the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback in Week 1, but that doesn’t mean Trey Lance won’t be involved.
Yes, you read that right.
Garoppolo revealed that he’s reached out to former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees to ask him for advice about how he managed the mix-and-match with Taysom Hill.
Jimmy G, don’t lie to us now!
Lance has electrifying talent for a rookie, but he’s shown some growing pains early on in the preseason. The 49ers could help bring him along by only giving him a handful of snaps, but it certainly wouldn’t make things easy on Garoppolo.
As for naming the starter for real, Kyle Shanahan is still not ready to publicly make an announcement.
WynnBET most recently had Lance’s odds to win the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award at +750, which was good for fifth on the list. If he gets to play in some early season games before eventually taking over the job, he could have a shot at the award, but it is worth noting that every quarterback to win Offensive Rookie of the Year since Matt Ryan in 2008 played in 15 or more games.
Just when fans thought they were free of the league’s only two-quarterback system, the 49ers may be bringing it back. Maybe Garoppolo is just preparing for any scenario, but it seems like the 49ers would like to get Lance on the field in some capacity.
The 49ers are currently tied with the Los Angeles Rams at +185 odds to win the NFC West. You can be sure that if Garoppolo struggles to start the year that Shanahan will have no problem turning to the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to take over to right the ship.
