Joe Burrow Can Become Football's First 'Triple Crown' Winner (Heisman, National College Championship, Super Bowl)
By Jon Helmkamp
What Joe Burrow has done with the Cincinnati Bengals is nothing other than historic. Two years ago, this Bengals organization was the worst team in the league, leading to them having the first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Enter Joe Burrow, coming off arguably the greatest college football season by a player, ever. In less than two years, Burrow has taken the Bengals back to the Super Bowl for the first time in 33 years.
Joe Burrow has a shot at the triple crown
Alright so it’s not technically the Triple Crown, but what else do you want to call it? Burrow would be the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, the National Championship in college, and win the Super Bowl. Considering the Heisman is awarded to the best player in college football, it feels weird that this hasn’t been done before.
Still, he’s on the cusp. He flat out outplayed Patrick Mahomes in the AFC Championship, which saw Mahomes completely collapse at home in the second half and surrender an 18-point lead. But it was Burrow that was calm under pressure. Unwavering, his ability to direct and lead a comeback where he under plenty of pressure, both figuratively and literally, was wildly impressive.
Burrow will have another tough task
In the Divisional Round of the playoffs, Burrow was sacked nine times by the Tennessee Titans. Somehow, they still won. The interior of his offensive line is likely the weakest part of the entire Bengals roster, which is a massive concern now that they’ll be going up against Aaron Donald in the Super Bowl.
It could be a fatal issue in this game. The Rams defense is as tough an opponent as Burrow has faced yet in his professional career. If Burrow has shown anything though throughout these playoffs, knocking off the AFC No. 1 and No. 2 seed to get to the Super Bowl, it’s that he shouldn’t be counted out, no matter the circumstances.
