It’s been almost two years since Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie pass rusher Joe Tryon has played in a football game, but that hasn’t stopped him from making an immediate impression on head coach Bruce Arians.

“He hasn’t been in pads in, what, two years? He’s whipping a lot of guys’ asses,” Arians said of the rookie. “That says a lot about him. He’s carving out a real, real nice role for himself.”

Tryon was the defending Super Bowl champs first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, and it appears he’s going to have a legitimate shot at some playing time in 2021.

At the moment, WynnBET has Tryon in the middle of the pack to win the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year award at +3000 odds. It’s a fair spot given Tryon’s uncertain role, but if he can find himself getting consistent playing time, he is a valuable pick at those odds.

The 2021 NFL Draft didn’t have many standout defenders, as Carolina Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn was the first defender off the board at No. 8 in the draft.

That means the Defensive Rookie of the Year award will be up for grabs, and it really will depend on the players who make the most of their role. Micah Parsons (+500), Pat Surtain II (+1200) and Horn (+1600) were three of the top selections, but the odds have shown players that have a straight path to playing time like Jaelen Phillips (+650) and Jamin Davis (+900) could win the award this season.

While Tryon is behind Jason Pierre-Paul and Shaq Barrett in the latest Bucs depth chart, if he can get into the pass rushing rotation, he certainly could make his impact felt.

Winning an award like Rookie of the Year is sometimes all about opportunity, and Tryon’s opportunities will come across from two of the games’ best pass rushers and on a solid defensive unit.

If Tryon continues to impress Arians and company, there’s a chance he could rack up some sacks in 2021 and win the award at those +3000 odds.
