John Deere Classic Dark Horse Picks, Sleepers and Longshots (Poston, Moore, Bryan Among Course Fits)
By Joe Summers
The John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run should be thrilling television this week as the course sets up for low scores and a ton of birdies.
Historically, it's an easy course for PGA standards and the tournament is one in which anyone can compete. Dark horse picks stand a better chance of succeeding here than normal, as a result.
You can check out my tournament preview here, but there's a few longshots to keep in mind as you're filling out your bet slip at WynnBET Sportsbook:
John Deere Classic Dark Horse Picks and Predictions
J.T. Poston (+4500)
I wrote in my preview that we're looking for streaky players that are accurate from short approach shots. Well, Poston proved at the Travelers Championship that he's fully capable of rattling off birdies. He had the second-most Strokes Gained: Approach last weekend en route to his third top-10 in his last eight tournaments.
Poston is ninth on tour in putting from 10'-15' and should give himself plenty of birdie looks thanks to his strong iron play. He's 27th in Par 4 Efficiency from 400-450 yards, showcasing an ability to handle a majority of the holes at TPC Deere Run.
Against a weak field, Poston should be full of confidence and I love him at +4500 odds.
Ryan Moore (+10000)
Moore is working his way back from injury but seems to love TPC Deere Run. He won the John Deere Classic in 2016 and finished second last year.
Coming off a T35 at the RBC Canadian Open, Moore took a couple of weeks off to get ready for this weekend and I think he comes out firing. He always performs well at TPC courses and I'll be surprised if he doesn't find himself in contention throughout the weekend.
We're getting incredible odds on Moore because he hasn't played much this season due to his injury, but there's no better way for him to reintroduce himself to the Tour than a strong performance at the John Deere Classic.
Wesley Bryan (+20000)
Here's a longshot for ya! Bryan is another player who loves TPC Deere Run. In his first tournament as a PGA Tour member in 2016, Bryan held a share of the 36-hole lead with Moore before finishing T8. The following year, Bryan birdied five of his final six holes to finish T3. This year, I think he's a great dark horse to win it all.
Bryan was built for the John Deere Classic. He's fourth on the entire Tour in approaches from 50-125 yards and 36th in Total Putting. Bent grass is his best putting surface, while his biggest weakness off the tee is mitigated by the design of the course.
At +20000, I'm thrilled to back Bryan at a course his game fits in a week that it feels like anyone can win.
