Jon Rahm vs. Sebastian Munoz: Who to Bet on in Round 1 of WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play
The WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play event is set to tee-off on Wednesday, a day earlier than every other PGA Tour event.
With it being match play format, this tournament is the perfect one to bet on. Wednesday through Friday will feature head-to-head matches between some of the best golfers in the world.
One of the best matches set to take place on Wednesday is between the No. 1 golfer in the world, Jon Rahm, and the No. 58 ranked golfer, Sebastian Munoz. The two are competing in Group 1. While Rahm may seem like the obvious bet to make, that may not be the case. I'll break down the argument for both golfers, and give me pick.
WynnBET has Rahm listed as the +125 favorite to win the group. and Munoz is listed with the longest odds at +350. The other two golfers in Group 1 are Patrick Reed (+275) and Cameron Young (+325). The match is set to tee-off at 2:50pm et.
Jon Rahm
Consensus odds have Rahm listed as the -225 favorite to defeat Munoz in the opening match, and while that may seem like a lock, history tells us we should be careful when betting on the top seeds in each group.
With that being said, Rahm has an 11-6-3 record in match play rounds in his career. Last year, he went 2-0-1 in the round robin event, defeated Erik van Rooyen in the first round of bracket stage, but then fell to eventual runner-up, Scottie Scheffler, in the quarterfinals.
Rahm has struggled with his short game this season, ranking 170th in strokes gained: around-the-green and 139th in strokes: gained putting heading into this weekend's event. That should be a cause of concern for anyone betting on him at Austin Country Club.
Sebastian Munoz
Consensus odds have Munoz listed as the +185 underdog against the world No. 1 golfer. Last year's event was the only time in his professional career that he's competed in a match play format, and it was a rough start for the Colombian. He finished the week 0-3, losing to Rahm, Ryan Palmer, and Shane Lowry.
Even though he already has a loss on his record, it's worth nothing that Rahm only beat him 1 up last year, needing all 18 holes to seal the deal.
Munoz, like Rahm, has struggled with his short game this season, ranking 187th in strokes gained: putting.
Pick: Rahm -225
I'm certainly going to be targeting underdogs in this event, but I don't think this is the time to fire on one. If Munoz was a better putter, than his strength could attack Rahm's weakness, but since neither golfer has been shining on the greens as of late, Rahm is leagues above Munoz in tee-to-green statistics.
Either lay the juice in this matchup, or stay away.
