There's a New Favorite to Win NL Rookie of the Year
The odds to win the National League Rookie of the Year have shifted rapidly this week. Trevor Rogers was the -200 favorite to win the award on Aug. 1, and he was still the -140 as recent as Monday this week.
While Rogers has struggled in recent starts, Cincinnati Reds second baseman Jonathan India has been thriving. He holds a .279 batting average this season, but what has been even more impressive has been his on base percentage. His on-base percentage is .398, which is the fifth best OBP in all of Major League Baseball.
Only Juan Soto, Bryce Harper, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Max Muncy have a better on-base percentage than India.
The recent developments have made India the new betting favorite to be named NL Rookie of the Year. WynnBET has him set as the -175 favorite, while Rogers' odds have dropped to +115.
India, with his odds set at -175, now has an implied probability of 63.64% of winning the award. He would become the first Reds player to achieve the feat since Scott Williamson in 1999.
No other rookie in the National League has a realistic shot of winning the award, as the player with the next closest odds is Patrick Wisdom at +1700. Ian Anderson (+2500) and Dylan Carlson (+3000) take up the fourth and fifth spot on the odds list.
Rogers isn’t out of the competition yet, but he’ll have to turn it on through the final stretch of the MLB season. He’s allowed two earned runs in five straight starts, and hasn’t had a start in which he has only allowed one run since June 15. His ERA at the end of that start was at 1.87, but it has slowly climbed up to 2.45 since then.
He will not be making his next scheduled start, as the Marlins placed him on the Bereavement List on Wednesday for personal reasons that have not yet been made public.
