Juju Smith-Schuster Expected as Steelers Top Wide Receiver by Oddsmakers
Less than two weeks ago, Chase Claypool was the runaway candidate to lead the Steelers in receiving. Over at WynnBET, Claypool had the best odds of all Pittsburgh wide receivers to lead the league in receiving at +10000. Diontae Johnson was second at +15000 and JuJu Smith-Schuster came in third at +50000 - tied at the bottom of the league.
While confidence in Juju may have been lacking initially, his odds have seen a major spike, placing him at the top of the Steelers' receiving leaderboard. Smith-Schuster now has odds of +6000 to lead the league in receiving.
All the Steeler receivers saw bumps in their odds. Claypool went from +10000 to +6000 and Diontae Johnson went up to +8000. With all of them in the same range, Smith-Schuster is in prime position to be the No. 1 option this upcoming season.
Last year, he was seventh in the league in receptions and tied for eighth in the league in targets. He also had the highest catch percentage of his career in 2020 (75.8%). With those numbers, Smith-Schuster hauled in 97 passes for 831 yards and 9 touchdowns. While the yardage wasn’t there, Smith-Schuster has the workload of a No. 1 option which sets him up for a great 2021.
Part of the reason Smith-Schuster is able to get so much work is because of the system. Pittsburgh was one of the most pass heavy teams in the league last season. Ben Roethlisberger had the third-most pass attempts in the league, only behind Tom Brady and Matt Ryan. Although Pittsburgh drafted Najee Harris, the strength of its offense remains their wide receivers.
Although Smith-Schuster is far from the top of the league, he should be the leader of the three-headed monster the Steelers have created.
