Justin Fields vs. Trey Lance: Who Will Start First?

Of the five rookie quarterbacks drafted in the first round, Justin Fields and Trey Lance are going to be the only two missing out being the starter for their teams. Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson were "no-doubters" to start Week 1, while Mac Jones just won the job over Cam Newton.

Fields and Lance are going to have to wait for their turns, but the question turns from “Will they start?” to “Who starts first?”

WynnBET is giving Fields +525 odds to win Offensive Rookie of the Year, while Lance is at +600 and +1500 to lead the rookie class of quarterbacks in passing yards; Fields is +2000.

Kyle Shanahan has already said that Lance will have a recurring role in the offense. On the other hand, Matt Nagy has been adamant that Andy Dalton is the starter. Despite those comments, I believe Fields will start before Lance.

The main reason I’m taking Fields is because the San Francisco 49ers are going to be a really good football team, even if Jimmy Garappolo is the quarterback. San Francisco made it to the Super Bowl the last time it had a healthy season. The 49ers are going to be okay, leaving Lance on as the backup until something goes terribly wrong.

Chicago, while I believe will be a playoff contender, is not going to be as good. Nagy and the front office are on thin ice as it is, and a bad start might force their hand in order to keep their jobs. Andy Dalton isn’t the quarterback that is going to save the Chicago Bears from mediocrity and he might cost the Bears some games early on.

If the Bears’ season starts with a hiccup, expect to see Fields be thrown into the fire with the task of trying to turn the season around.
