Latest Heisman Odds for LSU QB Max Johnson Following Myles Brennan Injury
By Peter Dewey
The LSU quarterback competition seems to have sorted itself out.
Sophomore Max Johnson and redshirt senior Myles Brennan had been battling for the job, but Brennan is now out indefinitely after suffering an injury to his left arm. It’s an awful blow for the senior, and the Tigers will proceed with Johnson as the starter for the time being.
WynnBET had been projecting Johnson to beat out Brennan for the job after he ended the 2020 season as the Tigers’ starting quarterback. Johnson’s Heisman Trophy odds have remained steady at WynnBET at +7500 entering the season.
Johnson likely won’t push Heisman favorites Spencer Rattler, Sam Howell, Bryce Young or DJ Uiagalelei, but he could build on what was a strong finish to his 2020 season.
Last year, Johnson threw for 1,069 yards, eight scores and just one interception in six games, but one of those games he didn’t attempt a pass (Oct. 24 against South Carolina where he had two carries for 19 yards).
Johnson threw for six scores in his final two starts of the season, and he certainly has the potential to become the Tigers’ starter for multiple years with a strong showing in 2021. Now that Brennan isn’t on his tail, Johnson will have a much longer leash now that head coach Ed Orgeron doesn’t have another option he can easily turn to.
The Tigers won the national title in 2019, but they finished last season with a 5-5 record. WynnBET has released win totals for the top teams in college football and LSU’s is set at 8.5 with the under (-130) favored to the over (+120).
Johnson will need to play like he did at the end of the season for the Tigers to hit the over on the mark in a loaded SEC.
