Let's Set Odds: Where Will Carlos Correa Play Next?
By Ben Heisler
Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa has accomplished a great deal since he began his MLB career in 2015.
He's won a Rookie of the Year award, been a two-time All Star, a World Series Champion in 2017, and also one of the names and faces synonymous with the cheating scandal of that World Series team.
While that infamous season may have some prospective teams hesitant to bring him on board with a lucrative deal, Correa's outstanding postseason resume could help drive his cost to anywhere between $175 - 250 million-plus on a long term deal. Via MLB.com, Correa is already seventh on baseball's all-time postseason home run list.
Since WynnBET has not set odds for where Correa could wind up, let's have some fun and set them here at BetSided!
Here are the most likely free agency destinations for the 27-year old shortstop.
New York Yankees (+175)
The Yankees would love to bring in someone like Correa who still has multiple years left before his age 30 season, and would relish his outstanding defense and presence in the middle of an already strong lineup.
New York has reportedly had initial conversations with Correa's representatives already as GM Brian Cashman has not been shy about revealing the team's feelings involving adding a star shortstop to their team.
Over at Yanks Go Yard, Adam Weinrib mentioned why Cashman's comments hold significant value in this situation:
"To hear it come from Cashman’s mouth, though, it’s obvious New York intends to heavily pursue the market’s best shortstop, preexisting concerns be damned."
I believe the Yankees are the favorites, particularly if money be damned in the equation.
Detroit Tigers (+200)
The Tigers are starting to get on the up-and-up, and if there's someone that Correa likely knows and trusts as much as anyone, it's Tigers manager A.J. Hinch.
While Hinch ended up taking the brunt of the punishment for the Astros' cheating scandal, he secured a managerial job a year later in the midst of the Tigers' rebuild.
MLB insider Jon Morosi sees a clear path for Correa to Detroit as the Tigers appear close to contending in the next few seasons.
Houston Astros (+600)
Correa is beloved in Houston and if they were willing to open their checkbook for a fair amount, perhaps he'd consider signing for a hometown discount.
Of course, that discount is still likely to be in the $200-250 million range, but maybe not the possible $275-300 million that he could command if teams view him as the top option ahead of Corey Seager.
Right now, the initial reports were that Houston offered Correa a 5-year deal for $160 million. If he takes it, he could still be a free agent again at age 32. Personally, I expect Correa to command much more money, even though it's a good deal from an average annual value. He can always sign a long-term contract and have it be structured for an opt-out 3-5 years in.
The Field (+400)
Other rumored teams on Correa include the Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals and Seattle Mariners. Personally, I'd keep an eye out for Texas and Philadelphia, who both have large pockets and believe an impact five-tool guy like Correa would be well worth the investment. If he ended up in Arlington, there's also the luxury of no income tax while still remaining in the state of Texas.
