Let's Set Odds: Which School Will March Madness Star Doug Edert Play for Next?
By Peter Dewey
There may not be a more recognizable face from March Madness this season than that of Saint Peter’s guard Doug Edert.
Edert, a sharpshooting guard, became the face of the Peacocks’ Cinderella run to the Elite Eight becoming the first No. 15 seed in history to reach the Elite Eight. Edert averaged 11.3 points per game while shooting 40% from 3 on the run, but it doesn’t look like he will be wearing Peacocks’ colors in the 2022-23 season.
Edert announced his intention to enter the transfer portal and explore all options going forward in his basketball career.
There’s no doubt that Edert could be an immediate impact player as a shooter, but it remains to be seen what his actual market is in the transfer portal. Will he actually get interest from Power 5 schools?
That remains to be seen. Still, he’s a career 39.2% shooter from beyond the arc and averaged 9.5 points per game last season in mainly a bench role.
He’s not going to be the hottest commodity in the transfer portal, but Edert is a public darling after the Peacocks’ run this season.
Let’s break down the hypothetical odds for his next team:
Odds for Doug Edert’s Next Team
- Seton Hall (+120)
- The Field (+140)
- Saint Peter’s (+400)
Seton Hall (+120)
This may be the easy choice, as Edert could follow former Saint Peter’s coach Shaheen Holloway to Seton Hall next season.
The Pirates made the NCAA Tournament but were bounced in the first round, and Edert could provide the team with an immediate shooting presence off the bench.
Holloway was beloved by his players, as they all supported him at his introductory press conference at Seton Hall, and Edert wasn’t the only player to enter the portal after Holloway left.
It’s very possible one or more of these players tries to latch on with Holloway’s new team, and I think that may be the best spot in a high-major conference that Edert could land.
The Field (+140)
There haven’t been any real targets announced for Edert in the portal, so we’re going to set “The Field” right behind the Pirates in the odds.
Any team that saw what Edert can do in the tournament could certainly use him as a stop-gap player to add shooting next season, but there still have to be questions about him playing at the high-major level.
Saint Peter’s plays in the MAAC, a smaller, usually one-bid conference. Edert was able to succeed in a small sample in the tournament, but it is worth noting he scored just two points against North Carolina in the team’s Elite Eight loss.
Edert did have solid games against Kentucky in the tournament and Providence during the regular season, but sometimes the step up to a bigger school isn’t always the best move.
I think if Edert leaves it will be for the right situation, but I wouldn’t guarantee him being in a Power 5 conference next season. If Seton Hall isn’t the answer, The Field is clearly the next-best choice.
Saint Peter’s (+400)
It is still possible that Edert could return to Saint Peter’s, but I don’t see it happening.
The Peacocks still haven’t found their next head coach, although they have been rumored to be targeting Rutgers’ Brandin Knight before he signed a contract extension.
The coaching decision will likely play a major role in Edert’s decision, and I don’t see the Peacocks offering him the step up in competition or his coach of choice to keep him in Jersey City.
