Let's Set Odds: Where Will Max Scherzer Play Next
Max Scherzer may be getting up there in age, but the 37-year old enters the MLB offseason as one of the top names on the market. Sure, he shouldn't be signed to a team that's in the process of rebuilding, but he was still one of the top arms in baseball last season and could provide a team that's ready to win now with a much-needed boost.
Unfortunately, you can't bet on where he'll end up, but I'm going to set my own odds for what team I think he'll sign with.
Max Scherzer Free Agency Odds
Los Angeles Dodgers -110
I think it's fair to say that the Dodgers have a 50% chance of re-signing Scherzer. It just makes too much sense for both parties involved. The Dodgers are in "win now" mode, and Scherzer has gone on record saying that he wants to play on the West Coast.
He was extremely effective with the Dodgers this season. He had a 1.98 ERA in 11 regular season starts after getting shipped there from Washington mid-season.
Los Angeles Angels +250
Los Angeles Angels manager has gone on record saying that the Angels need to make moved this offseason and sign players who are "ready to win now." Who fits that description better than Sherzer?
The right-hander would be able to stay in the city of Los Angeles, and play alongside the likes of Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout.
San Diego Padres +500
Many people thought that Scherzer was going to be shipped to San Diego at the trade deadline, but it ended up being Los Angeles that made the move for him. Now that he's a free agent, maybe he'll end up in San Diego afterall.
The Padres were disappointing last season, failing to live up to expectations. Adding a veteran arm like Scherzer would go a long way in rectifying that in 2021.
Boston Red Sox +650
Scherzer has stated that he wants to finish his career on the West Coast, but if any East Coast team can sway him to sign, it would be the Boston Red Sox. The Bo Sox are ready to win now, and their one area of weakness is their starting rotation. We also know that Boston isn't afraid to spend some money.
Seattle Mariners +1000
It may be surprising, but the Mariners could fit the bill for Scherzer. They're on the West Coast, and they finished just outside of the playoffs last season. With their offensive capabilities, a player like Scherzer could be enough to get them over the hump and make the postseason.
