Let's Set Odds: Who Will Replace Tom Brady as the Next Buccaneers Quarterback?
Tom Brady is officially retiring from the NFL.
After 22 years, countless records and seven Super Bowl rings, Brady is deciding to hang it up.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had their season ended by the Los Angeles Rams last week. Talk ensued shortly after that Brady was going to step away from the game, but it is now official.
Without Brady, that leaves Tampa Bay with a major hole at quarterback. In a wide open division, an elite defense and weapons all on the team, the next quarterback for the Bucs will be set up for instant success.
Before all the speculation starts about who will be the next starter for the Buccaneers, let’s set odds for who will replace Brady in Tampa.
Odds For Who Will Be The Next Buccaneers Quarterback
- Jimmy Garoppolo: +150
- Aaron Rodgers: +250
- Teddy Bridgewater: +275
- Russell Wilson: +400
- The Field / NFL Draft: -125
The Field/ NFL Draft: -125
The Buccaneers have the 27th and 60th picks in the first two rounds of this year's draft. If Bruce Arians leaves, Tampa Bay will go right back into rebuild mode and will likely trade up to get one of the secondary quarterbacks.
If Arians stays, there may be another quarterback outside of these four that can be put in his system. Several teams may decide to get younger and move on from their veterans. That seems like a much more solid and realistic plan than landing the big fish of the free agency market again.
Jimmy Garoppolo: +150
Although the San Francisco 49ers are in the NFC Championship game, Jimmy Garoppolo's time in San Francisco has been numbered since they traded up to get Trey Lance. No team in their right mind would give up what the 49ers did for Lance and sit him two years in a row. Lance gives the 49ers a greater margin for error in the long term, so Garoppolo should be expecting to have a change of scenery.
Tampa Bay would be ready made for any quarterback, but especially Jimmy G. Their offensive line is solid, the defense is one of the best in the league, and the Bucs have weapons for him to get the ball to. If the 49ers are bounced this week, expect to here a lot of "Jimmy G to Tampa talk."
Aaron Rodgers:+250
If the Bucs went from Tom Brady to Aaron Rodgers, it would be like trading in a Ferrari for a Lamborghini. It would set the league on fire, and it sounds like a move Rodgers would love to make. Rodgers' postgame statements were the opposite of what you wanted to here from your quarterback. He's made it clear since the beginning of the season that this was his last dance.
If the likely-MVP wants to go to a ready-made situation, Tampa Bay is the place for him. While the move makes sense football-wise, it his a high risk, high reward play in terms of "legacy." Brady won a Super Bowl in his first year. If Rodgers goes to his team and doesn't deliver, the conversation about Rodgers being an under-performer will never end.
Teddy Bridgewater: +275
When you move on from a quarterback, Teddy Bridgewater always seems like the guy to call. At this point, he is the epitome of an average quarterback and can serve as a bridge quarterback (no pun intended) for any team in the league.
If the Broncos decide to take a quarterback in this year's draft, Bridgewater could be on his way out. He put up just over 3,000 yards, 18 touchdowns and 7 interceptions last year. He wasn't fantastic, as he never is, but Bridgewater will do just enough to keep the Buccaneers competitive as they figure out what they want to do.
Russell Wilson: +400
Wilson has all but left Seattle by now. He's been linked to a lot of other teams prior to Brady's retirement. I think Wilson heading to Tampa Bay would be fun, but there seems like better landing spots.
Wilson had a down year, mainly due to injury. However, if he could get to Tampa Bay, his style of play combined with Bruce Arians' would be a perfect match. The Buccaneers would be one of the most explosive offenses once again.
Yet with better veterans (Aaron Rodgers) and younger quarterbacks (Jimmy Garoppolo), I think Wilson is going to be the second option in a lot of discussions.
