Lions Rookie Wide Receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown Makes Bold Prediction for First Season
By Peter Dewey
Detroit Lions rookie wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown has come into rookie minicamp with one mission:
Take someone’s job.
Now that’s an interesting way to endear yourself to your new teammates.
We love the confidence though, as the fourth-round pick has his sights set high on a Lions team that isn’t expected to make much noise in the NFC North this season.
"I’m excited to be here," St. Brown said. "I’m excited to work and I’m ready to take someone’s job."
Despite totaling 478 yards and seven touchdowns in just six games last season, St. Brown fell all the way to the fourth round with 15 other receivers being selected before him. He may have landed in the right situation on a rebuilding Detroit team as WynnBET has given him +5000 odds to win the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
"I’m never going to forget the 15 receivers that went before me in the draft," St. Brown said on Day 3 of rookie minicamp Sunday. "That’s kind of the chip that I have on my shoulder coming in, everything that I do. Whenever I’m thinking about anything, that just comes back to my mind and it just motivates me to do more."
It’s unlikely that St. Brown edges a quarterback like Trevor Lawrence (+275) or Justin Fields (+525) as the league’s top rookie, but he could climb the Lions’ depth chart after they lost both Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones Jr. in free agency.
Detroit picked up Tyrell Williams and Breshad Perriman to help fill the void but Williams missed all of last season with an injury and Perriman isn’t a proven commodity on the outside.
The Lions are going to want to put their new quarterback, Jared Goff, in a position to succeed and St. Brown already spent part of last week throwing with Goff in southern California.
"(Goff) looked amazing," St. Brown said. "It’s my first time actually throwing with him, so he looked awesome. He’s a smart guy, could grasp the offense really quick. Was moving guys around, so I’m excited."
The Lions have an exact win total projection of just four (+200) this season, but St. Brown looks ready to do all he can to make sure Detroit isn’t in the league’s basement in 2021.
