It’s Wednesday Night in the Fun Belt with the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns and Marshall Thundering Herd, perhaps the two most unique and interesting college mascot names, facing off in battle. The Ragin Cajuns find themselves at 2-3, 0-2 in the conference and in last place in the West Division. Marshall is 0-1 in conference play, but 3-2 overall with a win at Notre Dame on their resume.

Louisiana vs. Marshall Prediction and Pick

Louisiana is not only reeling after the departure of Billy Napier for Florida, but now they are down their starting quarterback, Chandler Fields for this week against Marshall. He tried to go against South Alabama on October 1, but had to be relieved by Ben Wooldridge. In extended action Wooldridge went 18/29 for just 90 yards, one touchdown and an interception.

The Ragin Cajuns might have to rely on the run game, but that will be tough sledding against Marshall, Chris Smith is their leading rusher with only 264 yards on the season, but he is running for 5.6 yards a pop. If Wooldridge continues to complete passes underneath and never push the ball downfield, then the team might have to hit home runs with Smith on the ground.

Marshall is equipped to deal with a rushing attack, they are the fourth ranked rushing defense in the country allowing 2.6 yards a rush this year and only 71.2 yards per game. The Thundering Herd have also had to gain their yards on the ground this season. Khalan Laborn has run for 736 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 5.5 yards a run.

Marshall is 13th in total defense, they will be able to stop this Louisiana attack and if they are able to score enough with Laborn then they will move to 4-2 and get their first Sun Belt win. The ball will also be kept on the ground which often means a low scoring affair. I’m comfortable with Marshall even as nearly eight point favorites and with the under.

Pick: Marshall -7.5 (-110) and Under 47.5 (-110)
