The Los Angeles Angels are set to host the Seattle Mariners tonight in a game between two underperforming franchises. Despite having a much better team on paper, the Angels are playing terrible baseball over the last month and remain in third place in the AL West. LA is 5-5 in their last 10 games including a Game 1 loss last night. However, due to some wonky scheduling, four of LA’s previous five wins came against the Mariners.

The Mariners aren’t doing much better at 33-39, but they also don’t have two of the best players in the history of the game on their team. At least they are living up to expectations, while the Angels continue to waste Mike Trout’s best years as a pro.

Mariners vs. Angels Prediction and Pick

Tonight’s pitching duel will be between Logan Webb and Patrick Sandoval. Both are having incredible seasons and playing very well so far in June. If I had to pick one over the other, I would side slightly with Webb in this game. But, not by much. At 7-3 with a 2.28 ERA and 1.04 WHIP, Webb has been the best pitcher on this team and one of the best in the MLB overall. He’s seventh in ERA, 16th in WHIP, and 10th in wins. Webb has also been outstanding against the Angels this year with a .184 batting average and 19 strikeouts spanning 48 at-bats.

Just because I think Webb is playing better ball at this moment doesn’t take anything away from Sandoval on the other side. His 3-2 record isn’t much to look at, but his 2.70 ERA and 1.32 WHIP make up for the lack of wins. Sandoval has seen this lineup a few times and overall has pitched well against them with a .234 BAA in 61 plate appearances.

It’s hard for my brain to believe that the Angels are playing as bad as they are considering the pieces they have in place to succeed. But, somehow they are defying the odds and getting their butt’s kicked left and right. While the Mariners are far from elite, I think with Webb on the mound they are a strong underdog in this spot.

Pick: Mariners +122
