The Seattle Mariners may be under .500 but took a thrilling series from the Texas Rangers over the weekend, winning in extras after erasing a three-run ninth inning deficit. Can they build some momentum as they head to Houston to face the first place Astros?

Houston is 35-19 and is primed to be a contender once again for the American League Pennant. If there is one thing the team struggles with it's left-handed pitching, like it will face on Monday night with lefty Robbie Ray on the mound.

Here are the odds for Monday's series opener from WynnBET Sportsbook:

Mariners vs. Astros Odds, Run Line, Total

Run Line:

  • Mariners: +1.5 (-140)
  • Astros: -1.5 (+115)

Moneyline:

  • Mariners: +147
  • Astros: -157

Total: 8 (Over -115/Under -105)

Mariners vs. Astros Prediction and Pick

It's been a bit of a fall from grace for the 2021 AL Cy Young winner, who has an ERA touching 5.00 as his walk rate is north of three per nine innings. However, he is still striking out a ton of batters and has been hurt by some unlucky variance in the field. Ray is punching out more than 10 batters per nine innings and has a FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) of 4.25.

The Astros have struggled against lefties a ton in 2022, posting the fourth lowest batting average at .215. Ray's ability to generate swing and misses and Houston's ability to find contact makes me bullish on the Cy Young winners ability to keep thrive on Monday night and outperform his underdog expectation.

Houston starter Cristian Javier has been stellar in his third season in the bigs, but I'm going to bank on some regression from him. In his first two seasons he had an ERA hanging around the 3.50 mark and has seen that drop to 2.41 despite similar walk and hit rates allowed. Javier's FIP is a bit higher than his ERA, and I like the matchup more for Ray to back the Mariners as underdogs.
