The San Diego Padres need to make up the ground they lost over the weekend when they lost three of four games to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Friars were neck and neck with L.A. before that series and now they have some catching up to do once again.

Trouble is, they are going up against a streaking Seattle Mariners team who entered this series 7-3 in their previous 10 games. I think this is the best pitching matchup of the day and the M’s might not deserve their underdog status on the road in Game 2.

Here are the odds for this game from consensus sportsbooks.

Mariners vs. Padres Odds, Run Line, and Total

  • Mariners: +1.5 (-195)
  • Padres: -1.5 (+165)

Moneyline:

  • Mariners: +110
  • Padres: -130

Total:

Mariners vs. Padres Prediction and Pick

Mike Clevinger may only have seven starts under his belt this year, but he’s done the most with those limited opportunities. At 2-0 with a 2.79 ERA and 1.10 WHIP, Clevinger came out of the gate hot. He’s been even better over the last four-game with a 2.40 ERA and a six-inning shutout of the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. In 24 total career at-bats, the current Mariners are hitting just .147 against Clevinger with no extra-base hits and a single RBI.

While Clevinger is having a great year, I have to give the edge on the mound today to the Mariners and Logan Gilbert.

Gilbert boasts a 9-3 record with a 2.66 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 94 ⅔ innings of work. To be fair, Gilbert has struggled lately with his ERA rising from 2.22 to 2.66 in his last three outings. He allowed the lowly A’s to drop four runs on his last week over six innings in what was a suspect start. Still, I believe he can get back on track on the road against the Padres tonight. Gilbert has actually been better on the road this year with a 2.55 ERA and 5-1 record over 53 innings.

The Mariners are hot and have one of the best pitchers in the AL on the hill today. I think Seattle has everything going for them here and makes for a great underdog play.

Pick: Mariners +110 ML
