The Seattle Mariners are currently hanging onto the second Wild Card spot in the American League at 70-58 after taking three of four from the Guardians over the weekend. Tonight they open another series in the AL Central against the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers are 50-78 and could serve as a springboard to the top Wild Card spot for Seattle.

Mariners vs. Tigers Prediction and Pick
Matt Manning hadn’t pitched since April when he made his start on Aug. 2. Tonight will be his sixth start in the month of August and he has a 2.37 ERA in 38.0 innings this year. His last outing, he went six scoreless innings against San Francisco in a 6-1 Tigers win. However, his expected ERA is 3.38 and his strikeout rate is below league average.
Manning’s strong month of August could be a fluke, last season his ERA was 5.80, but he is more likely to settle in somewhere between 2.37 and 5.80. Statistically, he has improved across the board from a year ago with a higher K%, a much lower hard hit rate, and an expected slugging that is down 80 points.
George Kirby was also good in his last start, giving up one run over seven innings, but he did allow eight hits and was facing the Nationals. Kirby’s expected ERA is lower than Manning’s at 3.30 and his ERA is 3.32.
The Tigers have an offense just as bad if not worse than the Nationals did, so Kirby’s success should carry over and put the under in play tonight.
Pick: Under 7.5 (-105)
