The Chicago White Sox and Seattle Mariners finish up a three-game series on  Thursday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field. The White Sox are currently 3-1 and are expected to dominate the AL Central again as they did in 2021. The Mariners, meanwhile, have lost three games in a row by a combined score of 17-6. After starting the year 2-0, things have gone wrong quickly.

Seattle is hoping that Logan Gilbert can build on his stellar season debut and snap this losing streak before it gets out of hand. Jimmy Lambert gets the start for the White Sox in what will be his season debut. I am intrigued by this pitching matchup with Lambert having just 15 innings pitched in the last two years.

Mariners vs. White Sox Prediction and Pick

Despite being a much better team overall, the White Sox are only slightly favored on Thursday because of this pitching matchup. Gilbert looked phenomenal in his first start of the season after going five innings against the Twins with seven strikeouts and one earned run. Gilbert ended 2021 on a roll with a 2.70 ERA in his last six starts of the year and led the Mariners to five wins in those starts. I think he is going to shock a lot of people this year with how far he’s come.

Lambert, on the other hand, is a huge question mark. He will be taking over for Lucas Giolito while the White Sox’s ace is on the IL. He is not fully stretched out and I expect him to be on a strict pitch count tonight. Lambert pitched only one inning this Spring and a hold. He pitched 13 innings total last year and finished with a 6.23 ERA with 16 hits and three home runs. Furthermore, the White Sox have the worst team bullpen ERA in the majors at 6.65.

I think it would be too risky to bet on the White Sox because of Lambert and this bullpen. Plus, at +103, the Mariners provide solid value on the road. Especially if Gilbert tosses another gem.

Pick: Mariners +103
