Matt Olson Trade Likely Signals End of Freddie Freeman Era with Braves
By Ben Heisler
The Freddie Freeman era in Atlanta appears to be over.
According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Braves have swung a deal with the Oakland Athletics to acquire left-handed hitting first baseman Matt Olson. The 27-year old is coming off a monster season as a 5.9 WAR (wins above replacement) level player, hitting 39 home runs, 111 RBI and an OPS+ of 153 (league average is 100).
The A's get back four prospects in the deal, notably No. 1 prospect outfielder Cristian Pache, a right handed 23 year old who should start right away in Oakland to start the season.
The Braves entered the start of free agency - post MLB lockout with the sixth-shortest odds to repeat as World Series champions in 2022, behind only the Dodgers, Padres and Mets in the National League at +1100. Oakland entered the beginning of free agency at +3000 WynnBET Sportsbook does not currently have futures odds up for Major League Baseball while several notable trades, free agent signings and other transactions are taking place.
Where Will Freddie Freeman End Up Signing?
The 32-year old first baseman remains one of the most consistent two-way players in the game. He comes off a 4.7 WAR season hitting .300 with 120 runs scored, 31 home runs, and an OPS+ of 133.
The L.A. Dodgers, who lost Corey Seager to the Texas Rangers may look to replace his left-handed production with a move for Freeman. The Chicago Cubs, while in the midst of a rebuild, could look to take on Freeman for his stability and leadership as the team looks to speed up the process. Other notable teams interested in his services could include the Mets as well as the Yankees and Red Sox.
