Do you know Frank Schwindel? Could you tell me what position he plays? What number he wears on his back? What team he plays for or where he even came from? Until recently, neither could I.

In the most basic description, Schwindel is a first baseman for the Chicago Cubs, he wears number 18, and he came to the Cubs organization on July 18th when Chicago claimed him after the Oakland Athletics designated him for assignment.

Schwindel would hit a home run in his season debut with the Athletics on June 30th. Unfortunately, Oakland’s front office didn’t know what they had.

The 29-year old rookie has hit a cool .343 average this season. Not too bad for a guy who didn’t even play baseball in 2020 and batted .271 across four minor league levels in 2019.

Here is a comparison since August 1st:

  • Frank Schwindel: .377 AVG, .424 OBP, .705 SLG, 1.129 OPS, 10 HR, 30 RBI
  • Mystery Player: .314 AVG, .420 OBP, .729 SLG, 1.148 OPS, 12 HR, 28 RBI

Pretty close, I’d say.

The Mystery Player is six-time All-Star and former National League MVP, the man who signed a 13-year/$330 million contract . . . It’s Bryce Harper.

Is it an overreaction to compare Frank Schwindel to Bryce Harper? Maybe.

But since August 1st, it’s not.

Schwindel has some intriguing prop bets on WynnBET. I think Schwindel can do some damage tonight against Wade Miley and the Cincinnati Reds, and taking the over on 1.5 total bases (+105), doesn’t seem too bad.

The Frank Schwindel show goes on.
