Memorial Tournament Is Perfect Time for Tony Finau to End Winless Drought
The Memorial Tournament is one of the more prestigious non-major events on the PGA Tour’s schedule, as it’s one of only five tournaments that are given the “invitational” status which features a reduced field of 120 golfers.
One of the 120 golfers that’s set to compete this week is Tony Finau.
Finau has earned a reputation on the PGA Tour for not being able to play well enough down the stretch to close out a victory, some have even given him the title of “choker."
Despite his reputation, as well as the fact that I’ve lost my fair share of bets on him over the years, I think this week’s event is the perfect time for him to finally break that narrative. Tony Finau will win the Memorial Tournament and WynnBET has his odds set at +2500.
Finau got his sole win on the PGA Tour at the Puerto Rico Open in 2016, which had a weaker field due to annually being held the same week as the WGC-Match Play event, which hosts the top 64 ranked golfer in the world.
Since that win, Finau has eight second place finishes including an 0-3 record in playoffs. His most recent heart break came at the 2021 Genesis Invitational when he lost to Max Homa in the second hole of the playoff.
There’s no doubt that Finau has been the best golfer in the world to not win a single tournament through this five year stretch since he won in Puerto Rico. Since that win, Finau also has nine top 10 finishes at major tournaments, including four top five finishes.
Between being a fan of the Atlanta Falcons and the Toronto Maple Leafs, I know a little bit about snakebitten teams/athletes, and I think this is the week Finau can turn it around.
Murifield Village boasts some of the smallest greens on the PGA Tour, which also lends the course to being the toughest scrambling course on the schedule.
So we’re looking for a golfer that has a great approach game while also being a good scrambler?
Enter Tony Finau.
The American ranks 13th on the PGA Tour both in strokes gained: approach the green and strokes gained: around the green. Finau’s past results at Muirfield also show that he’s comfortable on this track. In six years competing at the event, Finau has finished 13th or better four times. He has two top 10 finishes as well, including an eighth place finish last season.
Furthermore, now that Finau has been given the reputation of not being able to win a tournament, sportsbooks are offering some valuable odds on the guy seven top 10 finishes this year and is more due for a win than anyone else in the sport.
This weekend’s Memorial Tournament is the perfect time for Tony Finau to get a statement win.
